A meteorologia espacial refere-se ao estudo das condições meteorológicas a que o planeta Terra e todos os satélites em estão orbita estão sujeitos, em especial, por efeito do Sol. Em resultado da intensa atividade solar, que é caraterizada por grandes explosões, são geradas correntes de partículas energéticas que se movem rapidamente (ventos solares) e campos magnéticos muito fortes que podem provocar alterações e danos nas telecomunicações e sistemas eletrónicos, como aconteceu em 1989, quando uma tempestade solar provocou uma falha geral de eletricidade na região do Quebec (Canadá).
O estudo da atividade solar permite assim antecipar possíveis condições adversas e tomar medidas preventivas para poupar o material eletrónico. O estudo da atividade solar faz-se com recurso à análise de imagens de raios UV e raios X, capturadas por observatórios terrestres e por satélites, com vista à deteção, avaliação e acompanhamento de eventos solares tais como, sunspots, coronal bright points, entre outros.
